Cancel me

I am back once again. Boy, I do not learn

I had no time to blog last year because my family moved — a few houses down the street  — and because I was consumed by work and the boyfriend, who is now working in Singapore.

My time was consumed with the boyfriend because it was like we were trying to beat a deadline — we traveled to Baguio (the coldest place in this tropical hell of a country) back in February and I even traveled with him to Singapore in March.

And that’s not all the reasons why you should cancel me. I take all my “affordable” skincare product recommendations back.

Miniso should not be trusted. It’s a Chinese company pretending to be a Japanese brand. Much like Mumuso, another local drugstore retailer pretending to be a Korean brand.

I’ve since cleared my acne, which I discovered was fungal in nature, and am on my way to recovery (gotta get rid of hyperpigmentation first). Will post my updated skincare routine next week ^^

I have lined up posts to make sure I won’t disappear off the planet again. And am planning to buy a domain in three months’ time because I need to put my skincare needs first lol.

For example, next week, I will be undergoing laser hair removal for my underarms 1I know, I can spend thousands for skincare but not hundreds of bucks on a domain  because it’s really hot here and I have no time (too lazy) to wax. I am so sad to succumb to the patriarchal society’s standards for women but Dan Brown was right–the gates of hell is in Manila.

Onto grim news, one of my grandpas (on the side of my father) died this month. This was my first experience of losing a close relative–someone who I actually grew up with. I don’t know how to cope because it happened so fast.

On the bright side, I celebrated my first work anniversary on Labor Day (May 1). Still contemplating whether I should go to Singapore to earn (way) more or stay in the Philippines until the end of the May 2019 elections.

TLDR: I have a lot to tell you guys and I will make certain to catch up with y’all :)

  1. Welcome back! :)

Good thing you already cleared up your acne and you found out its cause! :) Haha acne is still something I struggle with a lot, but I’ve noticed that my acne problems are related to my poor sleeping habits, so they pop out whenever I do all-nighters T_T

I’m so sorry to hear about your grandpa :( It’s really hard whenever someone we love passes away, especially when it all happened so fast and we weren’t even prepared for what was to come :(

I feel for you! I still get acne during the time of the month (hormonal acne is a b*tch.) I use BHA/salicylic acid to spot-treat it :)
    Thank you so much <3

  3. Welcome back Gillan! You’ve been missed. Don’t worry about not blogging – sometimes life gets in the way sometimes and we understand that! Heck, I took two years off blogging a couple of years ago to get into university. It was stressful but I knew I couldn’t have done it if my concentration was split! You spent some time travelling with your boyfriend, which is great – reminds me that I need to book some travels this year myself haha.

Congrats on clearing up your acne! I’d love to hear your experience, I’m still on the journey myself. 🙈

Aww, thank you so much for understanding <3 Please do because I love your travel blogs!
I feel you, I still get the hormonal acne when aunt flo comes to town. Good luck! I don’t want to give unsolicited advice so I hope my next post could somewhat help you :)

  5. miniso is obviously a fake  but people still buy things there, me included. and that’s because i’m poor af. if i were rich, you bet i won’t buy anything from them and will instead choose muji or uniqlo (because these two are the “source of inspirations” behind miniso.) alas, when you’re poor and you need miscellaneous things to be cheap, you have to buy things from miniso even if it means you don’t want to support them, sigh. i also would buy from daiso (because the holy trinity of daiso, muji and uniqlo are miniso’s sources for plagiarism) but daiso’s stuff breaks so easily it’s unbelievable. then again, they’re cheap so i shouldn’t have expected much. i didn’t know about mumuso but here, we also have usupso and minigood. obviously these two are another bunch of clones so, meh.

i don’t know how bad your acne is but try azelaic acid if you want. i’ve tried tea tree oil before and it burns my skin; tried benzoyl peroxide and it leads to dry flakes. the only ones that help are azelaic acid and acne gel with isopropylmethylphenol (i use the acnes mentholathum sealing gel and it always works fast) azelaic acid can help with rosacea too btw ^^

“Dan Brown was right–the gates of hell is in Manila.” – this cracks me up so bad! it makes me wonder how the heat feels like in manila. is it like hot-humid or hot as in dry hot and no wind at all the way summer would be in countries with seasons? because in indonesia, it’s hot-humid. we do have days where the humidity is dampened by how bright the sun is but most days are hot but with humidity. still hate it though. i hate the heat lol

I also still buy things from there because their prices are so low :( We also have Muji in the country but the stores are too far from my area–thank god because I’d spend a lot like I do in Uniqlo. But Uniqlo has very nice basic jeans, shirts, and jackets so money well-spent

I’ve heard about it but the only product I know is The Ordinary’s. What azelaic acid do you use? :)

It’s hot and humid. I forget that Indonesia is also a tropical country. I’m glad someone could relate!

  11. It’s always understandable when things happen and we have to take a break from blogging/online things. You’ve been all over the place! We have a Miniso nearby in LA. Didn’t know they’re a fraud! Thanks for the information!

I’m sorry to hear about your grandfather. Sending you and your family my best wishes.

  13. Welcome back to the blogosphere!

I’m sorry to hear about your grandpa… May you be comforted by the outpouring of love surrounding you.

I have never bought anything related to skincare from Miniso. Now that you mentioned it, I think I should not even try their products now.

  15. Yay your back!

That’s one thing I sometimes hate about trying different products. I don’t usually get reactions or anything, but once in a while I do. I hope all your issues with your skincare and what not get better!

I’m sorry to hear about your grandfather. hugs Its hard to deal with sometimes. Everyone reacts in different ways to those things. I’m sure he’s in a better place watching over you though!

  17. Omg this post was so all over the place, I felt like I was on a wild roller coaster ride. Whew! /wipes sweat and unruffles hair

Wow! I’m glad you got some traveling in though, though seems like your skincare routine has been a bit hectic! I’m getting too old to not do anything with my skin, so I should probably start trying to figure out at least a simple one to keep my skin from rotting off at 30…

Can you move but then fly back during the election season? I know a lot of expats in other countries do that (a lot of my Taiwanese friends’ parents fly back every Taiwanese election too).

I’m so sorry about your grandfather. :( There’s really not much other than time that can heal wounds so close to the heart, eh?

Sunscreen is the key to not aging, at least according to some Japanese women who have amazing skin.

Not really because I’m staying not as a voter, but as a journalist :) An election is a pretty big coverage, so I’m not sure my editors will (literally) let me go easily :(

    Thank you, you’re right :)

  19. Haha!! Miniso and Mumuso tricked me too but then I never bought any skincare products from theme except for tissue (wet & dry), compressed face mask, and headbands :D I was already discouraged to buy from them when I notice their products’ packaging is a knock-off of best selling K-beauty brands. Anyway, looking forward to your upcoming posts. Welcome back!

On June 7th, 2018, Gillan replied:

Sadly, even their headbands weren’t that effective as some of my hair still slip through it :(
How are their compressed face masks? I’m a bit wary of sheet masks because they always leave me with CCs.
Thanks! I’ve since updated my skincare routine with legit products on my latest post

On June 7th, 2018, Alyssa replied:

@Gillan, I like you can make your own sheet mask with it using the products you like. However, it takes too much product (toner and/or essence) to truly get soaked. It’s not cost efficient :(
