So I read somewhere on Tumblr that Club Penguin is going to close soon and curiosity got the best of me and I checked if it was true. It was. It will close on March 29th to be exact. I suddenly felt nostalgic. My mind went back to the days of dial-up internet, searching for game websites like Y8, and custom-made Friendster and MySpace layouts.

No, I didn’t start coding in Friendster or MySpace but rather in a doll-making website called The Doll Palace.

The Doll Palace, March 2017

It wasn’t like other doll sites; it had avatar chat where you can visit rooms and move around your avatar (much like Habbo) and it had profile and club & clique pages. The latter is why I learned how to code and use Photoshop.  I wanted mine to have glitter and snowflakes too. You were cool back then if everything was animated and flashy.
I knew I wasn’t the only one who feels sad that TDP is gone. I went on Tumblr and searched for it. Here are some of the posts that came up:

I also played TDP in elementary school, around 2006

I never had a premium account because I knew my parents weren’t going to allow me to use their credit card lol

I even found a post lamenting its demise, which you can read here.

I don’t recall finding bloggers on TDP. If you used to play it, kindly comment below!

Tbh, I also haven’t really been on Tumblr for the past three years or so. But because I keep seeing screenshots of Tumblr posts on my Facebook feed, I thought why not just visit the site itself. I actually missed Tumblr’s quirkiness.

How about you guys? How did you start coding or blogging?

  1. dang, i never knew about club penguin before. i didn’t grew up playing it either. i grew up playing games on consoles so i was clueless about most pc games even though i did know certain mmorpg ones like ragnarok online lol

i don’t remember when did i start coding but i remember i started making graphic freebies website. it was a huge hit back then, having graphic websites offering free icons or banners etc featuring celeb faces, anime characters etc. i think i stumbled upon a graphic website with decent layout and i thought, “this is cool. i wanna learn and have one.” ah, i was so much diligent back then lol because see, i actually learned how to code by myself, from scratch. now, don’t expect me to learn new programming language because i’m sick of codes. other people continue to grow by familiarizing themselves with codes like ruby, sass css, etc but me? nope. i gave up my goal as front-end developer too because i found UI / UX designer and i want that role now. the only codes i can still understand are html and css, nothing else. but anyway, i played around with codes and well, if you remember, i used to code my own blog layout but it was ugly and not even responsive lol i hate it (i was proud of it back then though wtf self haha)

i don’t necessarily when i first blogged too. hm.. i think it started on blogger before i moved to wordpress, changed my domains and subdomains again and again because i was fickle af and now, here i am..with a fixed domain and on blogger haha

True! Everyone had content to offer back then haha I rarely see those kind of blogs now and when I do they make me nostalgic.
Omg, same! I still do up to now because I haven’t found a perfect theme, I’m so picky :(
I also used to have blogger. And remember LiveJournal? haha
Aww, I think it’s cool you ended up on the site you started <3

@Gillan, omg livejournal was the shit! All the cool kids used LJ, remember? Hahaha and LJ was mostly used to write fics and blog bout fandom stuff. Not really the kind of things we see on normal blogs now, if ya know what i mean. We’d also put “friends locked” banner on lj, remember? Hahaha good times. It’s so funny thinking about it now.

  3. I’ve never heard of that site before….but I’ve never been into socials very much – never had a MySpace account, to give you an idea – either, so I can’t really talk.

The Wiko uses a bit more personalized version of Android, but it’s still Android; it’s a French brand, maybe that’s why the phones are only availables in Europe – you can in fact only find accessories for it on Amazon, but not the phones themselves. :)

@Gillan, By chance, I was browsing image galleries and I stumbled across a graphics designs/blogging site; I loved that site and wanted to know more about how the owner created the content, so I started reading html tutorials. I self-teached myself some Photoshop for a couple of years – while I kept browsing and looking at blogs and resources sites to learn coding – then I decided to try it out and opened my first graphics site and a small blog. And the rest is history.

  11. Hi Gillian! Thanks for dropping by at my blog <3

I started coding back in HS on freewebs when I stumbled upon someone's blog and I just learned what is blog then. I was really interested on it that I tried to make friends on some bloggers to ask for tips XDD Back then I used freewebs.com (which is now webs.com) for manual coding since I really wanted as well my very own layout and all XD and that's when I found about hostings, wordpress, blogger and all~

I never knew TDP but it looks so cool~ It feels like Gaia Online where you customize your avatar too and make friends online :)
I miss friendster too. Before facebook I was really into friendster XD I do friendster layouts too coz I wanted mine unique! AHAHAHA! Oh those were the days XD

    Btw– wanna be affies? :)

@Xian, I remember freewebs! It was one of the free site hosting I ever tried. Iframes were cool back then because people didn’t want to edit each page 😂
Same, I didn’t stay long in Blogspot and MySpace.
Omg Gaia Online! I feel so nostalgic right now.
Sure, I already added you on my blogroll ☺

  13. That website looks familiar to me, maybe I had used it at least once before. Maybe it’s the same feeling from when friendster announced that they were shutting down. I had mixed of emotions back then. My HTML/CSS life started there, back when I was still in grade school. I was so hooked, I joined a lot of tutorial forums and made friends with other people there until I discovered blogging.

Now I wonder if facebook, twitter or instagram will soon come to end just like these websites. I hope they won’t or at least not too soon.

  15. Omg, I remember being on CLub Penguin ALL the time. That was my jam back inthe day, alongside Habbo.

I remember Doll Palace, vaguely! I don’t think I was ever active on there as much, but I definitely remember the dolls.

I started experimenting with coding in secondary school, so around 13/14, when I had Piczo, Matmice, etc. I ended up not learning coding for a while, so I only know the basics but I started blogging when I was 16 and started off on Livejournal :)
