Wait for it

Today marks my unemployment for three months, which I swore to myself I’d never reach and yet here we are

However, I have an interview tomorrow with one of the biggest newspaper companies in the , and which I interned for in college. If you actually want to read about my unemployment, click here. I also tried the duotone technique in this post; a big thanks to Elise for introducing me!

To “celebrate” both my 3-month unemployment and the interview, I think it’s about time I introduce y’all to Hamilton: An American Musical. 1If you’re already a fan then we’re already best friends!

Guess who threw away his shot?

I’m still trying to get into hip hop 2I love Nicki Minaj, Childish Gambino, and Chance the Rapper., but I am a sucker for musicals, as I’ve stated in my Oscars post. So when I read that Hamilton is a hip hop musical, I couldn’t fathom it. But when I first listened to the cast recording, I instantly fell in love with it.

When I listen to songs, I don’t really care for the melody; I listen to the lyrics. And Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lyrical genius. If you love spoken word poetry, you’ll love his lyrics. His beat and lyrics are so good that Hamilton’s cast recording album hit number one in Billboard’s Rap chart for 10 weeks.
Also, I love that it promotes diversity by casting POC to play white characters. And women empowerment? Check.

The Schuyler sisters.

If it isn’t obvious yet, Wait for It is my favorite song in the cast recording 3Satisfied is a close second because Angelica’s rap is fire.. I can definitely relate to Burr’s struggle to wait for his opportunity to shine while Hamilton is killing it in US politics at the time 4Who knew I’d relate with a US Vice President? Then again, I love Joe Biden like he loves ice cream. because my friends have jobs, although some of them are going to quit soon to pursue what they love like what I am currently doing.

I think we’ve all had moments where we’ve seen friends and colleagues zoom past us, to success, or to marriage, or to home ownership, while we lingered where we were—broke, single, jobless. And you tell yourself, ‘Wait for it.’

– Lin-Manuel Miranda on “Wait for It”

Wait for it.

It’s also really cool because Hamilton is informative. It’s weird that now millions of young adults have a terribly vast knowledge of a Founding Father’s life but hey, history lessons never hurt anybody.

If you want to give Hamilton a listen, I suggest you listen to it in its actual order so that you can envision the story. However, if you want to give only a few songs a try, here is a playlist of my suggestions, which also basically tells the story of the musical: 5These are not in a most to least favorite order. 6I purposefully switched The Schuyler Sisters and My Shot to give it variance and I feel like listening to a song about women sung by women will just get you guys hooked.

If you guys gave even just one of these songs a listen, my heart would be so happy  And if you did, please mention the one you liked most in the comments ^^

Here is a gallery of a few Hamilton text posts I find funny. Of course, they’re all from Tumblr, literally no one is surprised  Click here for more.

Unemployment

A little background: I quit my first job in December, which is a social media management position in a national broadcasting company. I quit because I don’t see myself in that career path further down the road as it’s not something I’m passionate about.

I admit, it’s my own fault why I’ve been unemployed for so long because I do not want to commit to a job that I know is “only for the time being” or “just so I could already be employed.” 7I have already declined six job offers so far because I knew they wouldn’t work out or I would’ve quit after only a few months, while some were because of a non-compete clause. I would like to stay a year or more on my next job so I can’t afford to make another mistake.

And so, I’m willing to wait for it.

  1. When I graduated it took me about 3 months to find a job as well. While it was kind of nice because it was summer so I got to see in the sun most of my days, it did get a little boring not having a job.

Would you not be able to look for a new job while you are already employed? Or would it be too difficult to find time to go to interviews? Good luck with this one!

Thank you so much! I did look for a job while I was employed. I got a job offer but I declined because of a non-compete clause and because it was way too far from my house that I’d just go home to sleep and wake up the next day to go to work

  3. LOL I absolutely love the idea of celebrating your 3 months of unemployment. I swear it is just so much harder for our generation than it has ever been before – we are all overqualified and underpaid (that is, if we even HAVE a job!)

And Hamilton: An American Musical! I have not seen it yet myself, and doubt I will as I am living in Berlin and it has not made it’s way here yet, but my parents are super up on musicals and the arts and saw it and said it was absolutely incredible.

  5. dude, i’ve been unemployed since last year. ha! beat that! *punches self because why the hell are you proud, self!?* lol jk. as i’m typing this, i’m one day away from attending a second interview with a company that’s offering me the opportunity to freelance. i’m so anxious i’ll probably gonna cry tomorrow before entering the meeting room
isn’t it amazing how tomorrow we’re going have our interviews? on the same day? good luck to you though, Gill!

i’m not huge on musical so i never really knew about hamilton. i’m also not a fan of hiphop – nicki minaj, drake, etc… those kinds of music make my head hurt  please don’t be offended haha i’m more of an indie record gal, i guess? i do listen to some “radio songs” though, like ed sheeran for instance (i loooove castle on the hill, way more than shape of you)

i wonder if it’s an INTJ thing because i, too, refuse to work in a job for the sake of just because. i’ve been extremely picky with the companies i want to send my cv to. i’ve been browsing and job hunting since…. January, i think? i’ve had interviews but none of them made me go “yes, i WANT to BE here!” you know? i know how some people probably think i’m not supposed to be picky because i’m a fresh graduate and the only experiences i had were from my internships. but i don’t want to apply to a company for the sake of so i can have a job and profit, you know? i don’t want to be like those people who get up in the morning and be like “uuuuurgh, work agaaaain” because i want to wake up in the morning and actually feel excited going to work! does that make sense? i don’t want to be a corporate slave; i want to have a job that i’m proud of and feel good doing. i see lots of adults who stick with their job for the sake of just because and ugh, the expressions they make, man… i don’t wanna be as…lost as them.

while i know the ideal, perfect job is almost impossible as each company has its own pros and cons, i can’t help but feel picky. because if i land onto the wrong job at the wrong company, i’ll have to go through that for moooonths. i’ve also declines several interviews because i know i don’t want to be there. haha, we’re so alike it’s scary omg

It’s okay! I like indie too, but most of them are local bands, though haha as long as the lyrics are good, I am down.
Same, I want to enjoy and be proud of my job. I don’t want to work for just the money. “People probably think i’m not supposed to be picky because i’m a fresh graduate” I can relate so much to this!
Yes, or else you’d be accused of job-hopping or that you can’t hold a job for a long time lol

I love musicals too – my favorites are Notre-Dame de Paris, Roméo et Juliette de la Haine à l’Amour (a.k.a. Romeo and Juliet the Musical) and Les Misérables. <3
I've heard of Hamilton but, when I tried to buy the "soundtrack" on iTunes, it said it wasn't available for purchase (have no idea why, don't know if it was just me…) and any related videso on YouTube I found either sucked or was downright muted if not "removed" due to copyright claims….but I'm not giving up. I'll watch it one day – from what I heard, Hamilton is too good to be missed out. :*

Anyway, it’s nice that you’re really thinking this through. And I agree, it’s better to choose a job that you’re really passionate about so you won’t end up hopping from one job to another, trying to look for contentment.

As for Hamilton, I’ve heard a lot about that musical so maybe I’ll check it out soon. I’m in the office right now (and my earphones are broken), so I might listen to it later when I get home. Hehe.

Finally someone who considers Chester a good singer! Many people – even other LP fans – think he’s not that good and that’s why he only sings choruses, bridges or (I quote) “minor songs”….pfff, those people should listen to Chester singing Adele’s Rolling in the Deep.

Glad to meet another fan of Harry Potter, The Hobbit and LotR….I actually prefer the second to the last. I don’t know, Bilbo and Thorin “spoke” to me more than Aragorn, Arwen, Legolas, Gimli, etc.

In terms of “employment”, I have actually been unemployed for a long time now. But I don’t consider myself as one anymore. I’m an online seller, and a freelance blogger at the same time. Before, I used to be to hard on myself just because “nasa bahay lang ako,” and “wala akong trabaho.” But now, I realized na kumikita naman din na ako ng pera, plus nag eenjoy pa ako sa ginagawa ko. :) So now, hindi ko na rin iniisip kung ano man ang sinasabi or sasabihin ng iba.
